Current Incentives to Replace Residential Heating Systems

As we approach the end of the current home heating season, now could be a great time to save on replacing old or inefficient home heating systems. A more efficient heating system could help reduce energy waste, lower energy bills, and when replacing wood stoves that emit a lot of smoke, could help insure compliance with local regulations and improve the air we all breathe.

Federal and Oregon 2016 tax credits are available for eligible new heating systems, and there are also current incentives available from Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) and NW Natural. In addition, Carrier has a manufacturer’s rebate promotion of up to $300 on select ductless systems through June 30, 2016.

EWEB provides rebates up to $750 or 0% interest loans, subject to eligibility requirements, to help customers invest in recommended energy-efficient improvements. They also provide contractor lists and tax incentive information. Kathy Grey, EWEB Energy Management Programs Supervisor, provided the following helpful information:

  1. EWEB electric customers whose homes are heated ONLY with a woodstove (no other heating source) are eligible to install a new efficient primary electric heating system, like a ducted or ductless heat pump, and to use EWEB’S incentives.
  2. EWEB electric customers whose homes have BOTH a woodstove and an older primary heating system may replace the existing heating system with a new efficient electric heating system, like a ducted or ductless heat pump, and be eligible to use our incentives. However it may require removal of the existing older primary heating system to be eligible.
Ms. Grey said that the best way for an EWEB customer to determine program eligibility is to contact Energy Management Services at or call 541 685-7000 and ask for Energy Management Services.

NW Natural reports that now through May 31, 2016, customers can receive up to $3,042 back (including federal and state energy tax credits) when they upgrade to a new high-efficiency natural gas furnace and air conditioner. NW Natural also indicated that the Energy Trust of Oregon Savings Within Reach program makes it easy for moderate income homeowners to make efficiency upgrades with on-bill repayment financing and a $550 incentive for eligible households. Instant savings of $550 are also available for eligible owners of single-family rental properties in Oregon to make upgrades through the Energy Trust of Oregon Gas Furnaces in Rentals program. Finally, subject to guidelines, NW Natural is offering an additional $250 bonus to new customers when they convert their electric or oil furnace to a natural gas furnace by May 31, 2016.
