Mayor Piercy Supports Brown’s Motion to Withdraw South Willamette Special Area Zone Package…Calls for Community Forum

Mayor Piercy sent the following message to the City Council and City Manager over the weekend. It calls for a withdrawal of the South Willamette Special Area Zone package and sets the date for a community forum.

All, No one ever said planning for the future of Eugene would be easy. When we agreed to the pillars of Envision Eugene, I think we all knew the challenges ahead would be significant. I also know we share a belief that the future of our city is very important for generations to come. Through the EE process, the community spent a lot of time talking about what we love and want to preserve and protect as we move forward. We also talked about improvements we need to foster to provide more opportunities for those working so hard to provide for themselves and their families.

In South Eugene we have learned how vulnerable the community can feel when these hopes and visions shift to implementation. All of us, staff included, have acknowledged the need for a pause in the conversation. More than ever, I believe we need to create a safe and supportive environment to listen and learn from the community before moving forward with any land use decisions.

As you know I have promised to convene a forum to hear all voices, ideas and concerns about South Willamette. Councilor Brown will put a motion forward on Monday to withdraw the South Willamette Special Area Zone package and I support that. I think this is very important. We need to provide certainty to neighbors as a step to establishing the trust we all need to move forward as a community. I have talked to the City Manager and we have scheduled a work session on June 27 to discuss proposals for moving forward. I promised to do that when council received the proposal from Councilors Brown and Clark.

I intend to convene the forum on June 20th to allow all of you Councilors the opportunity to attend. That is a scheduled night for hearings (when needed). I wanted to make it convenient for you. The most important thing we can do together at this time is to listen and learn from the community so that they can have confidence that we working toward their collective best interests.

Hope you are all enjoying this sunny weekend.

Kitty
