The Eugene Masonic Cemetery (EMCA) will host its spring work party and Mitzvah Day on Sunday, May 15th. Cemetery board members and landscape staff will be there to work with volunteers and determine what work needs to be accomplished. Meet at Hope Abbey at 10:00 AM. Please bring gloves for landscape work.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work with others to make lasting landscape improvements and to prepare the cemetery for Memorial Day weekend. At the end of May, many families make pilgrimages to honor their deceased. Each Thursday following Memorial Day, from 7:30-9 pm, all are invited to join the Eugene Sacred Harp Singers at the mausoleum. Traditional American shape-note hymns resound in the marbled chamber, loud enough to “wake the dead.” Here is the 2016 schedule of events.

The Eugene Masonic Cemetery is located at the corner of East 25th Avenue and University Street. Parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood. It is the final resting place of many of the founders of Eugene, including Eugene and Mary Skinner, John Whiteaker (the first governor of Oregon), and the first presidents of both the University of Oregon and Northwest Christian University (then college). Familiar Eugene names including Friendly, Chambers, Condon, Luckey and Kerns can be found here.
