A pair of Haggen grocery stories in Eugene will close Wednesday night and reopen next Thursday as Albertsons. “They will be closed for that one-week interval in which the stores will be converted,” Albertsons spokeswoman Jill McGinnis said Tuesday in an email. Signs at both stores — at East 30th Avenue and Hilyard Street and West 18th Avenue and Chambers Street — indicated pharmacies at the stores will stay open during the remodeling.
Advertisement showed the stores will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday and reopen for grocery sales on the morning of June 23.
Once the Eugene Albertsons in Eugene are reopened, minor construction will continue for a few weeks, McGinnis said. All the former Haggen employees at the stores will work for Albertsons, and that the stores will add employees.
“We feel great about the fact that all of the current employees are staying, and that we are adding 31 additional positions at our Hilyard location and 45 additional positions to our store on 18th (Avenue),” McGinnis said.
Albertsons announced in March a deal to buy 29 Haggen stores in Oregon and Washington. The two Eugene stores were part of the agreement between Albertsons and Haggen.
The switch back to Albertsons for both locations signals the end of Haggen’s short era in Lane County. Haggen bought the stores last year as part of the purchase of 146 Albertsons and Safeway grocery stores.
Before buying the stores, all of which were on the West Coast, Haggen had 18 stores in the Northwest. Haggen is based in Bellingham, Wash. The company declared bankruptcy last September after struggling in its huge expansion attempt and put many of its stores up for sale, including the Eugene locations and a store on Main Street in Springfield.
Albertsons merged with Safeway last year, leading to the mass sale of stores on which Haggen tried to capitalize. Albertsons/Safeway has now been buying back many of its old locations. It bought the former Haggen store in Springfield earlier this year and then reopened a Safeway there in March.
