At the end of 2015, the Mayor and City Council declared a homelessness and housing crisis and passed a Housing First resolution. The Poverty and Homeless Board (PHB) is working on a draft plan for publicly funded shelter beds for unhoused persons, but that plan is still in its preliminary stages.
Recognizing the homelessness crisis and the unlikeliness that the funding and implementation required for publicly funded shelter beds will come together before the rainy, winter months, the Council of South Eugene Neighborhoods set a goal for the Vulnerable Populations Working Group to find 40 safe shelter spots for people experiencing homelessness by winter.
The July meeting of the working group will include a training session on the legal, community supported shelters options available in our community, and a talk from Terry McDonald, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul.
- When: Wednesday, July 6 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm
- Where: Hilyard Community Center, 2580 Hilyard St.
Neighbors from Friendly Area Neighbors, Southwest Hills Neighborhood Association, Southeast Neighbors, and Amazon Neighbors are invited to join us to work towards local solutions. Contact Heather Sielicki at email@example.com for more details and to RSVP.
