policeVolunteers age 50 or older are wanted for the Squad Car Maintenance Team. Applicants must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, pass a police background check, have a good driving record and commit to one four-hour shift per week (weekdays). Time off and vacations are allowed. Working in pairs, teams conduct minor maintenance checks, inventory and stock trunks, wash vehicles inside and out, and shuttle vehicles needing mechanical work to and from the city’s fleet shop.

The department also needs volunteers age 50 or older for the Seniors on Patrol Team. Applicants must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, pass a police background check and have a good driving record. Training includes academy and field training. The minimum commitment is one five-hour shift per week and attendance at a monthly team meeting. Time off and vacations are allowed. Team members are issued uniforms and work in pairs operating specially marked vehicles equipped with police radios. Bicycles also are available. Teams observe and report suspicious activity, use a radar gun as part of a traffic calming educational program, perform home vacation checks, issue warnings and citations to violators of signed disabled parking spaces and assist with a variety of crime prevention efforts.
